What to See
Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Kathmandu
A Buddhist stupa complex at least 1,500 years old, accessible by 365 steps above the city. The stupa's dome is decorated on four sides with the Buddha's eyes. The sacred monkeys live here — do not smile at them directly.
Pokhara & the Annapurna Range
The gateway city to the Himalayas, where the Annapurna peaks are visible on clear mornings from the lakeside. Base for trekking, hang gliding, and every other activity that involves staring at mountains.
Lumbini
The birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, born here around 563 BCE. The Maya Devi Temple marks the exact spot. Dozens of monasteries from Buddhist nations across the world surround it, each in its own architectural tradition.
Royal Chitwan National Park
Real conservation — rhinos, tigers, crocodiles, a functioning ecosystem. The Tharu community homestay is excellent. If you visit, push back on any elephant interactions that don't meet sanctuary standards.
Kathmandu's Electrical Infrastructure
Not a joke. The utility poles in Kathmandu support bundles of wire so thick and tangled that 'bundle' stops being the right word. They hang low enough that vehicles pass under them daily. That anything in the city has electricity is genuinely miraculous.
Everest Base Camp Trek
Seventeen days of trail through Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries, and altitude that takes your breath more literally than figuratively. You don't see the summit — you see the base of it, which is already overwhelming.
