In 1950 Ohio closed a dam on Cowan Creek and flooded a valley holding more than twenty Adena burial mounds. Archaeologists had time to excavate exactly one. On the other side of that same dam, the spillway is packed with 445-million-year-old sea creatures you can pick up off the ground.

Three and a half miles of earthen wall on a bluff above the Little Miami River, moved half a million cubic yards at a time in baskets, by people whose names nobody wrote down. It's called Fort Ancient. It was never a fort — and the culture named after it didn't build it. Almost everything about the name of this place is wrong, and what's actually true is stranger.
