Southeast Asia
Cambodia
The greatest temple complex ever built, still being excavated.
Angkor is not just Angkor Wat β it's a complex of hundreds of temples spread across 400 square kilometers of jungle, built by the Khmer Empire over four centuries. Angkor Wat itself is the largest religious monument in the world by land area. Ta Prohm lets the jungle in on purpose. Most visitors see a fraction of the site in a single day. Budget more time.

What to See
Angkor Wat Sunrise
The main temple reflected in the moat at dawn is one of the most photographed moments in Southeast Asia for a reason. It earns it. Get there early β the light changes fast.
Bayon Temple
216 massive stone faces carved into 54 towers, each face looking in a different direction. Built by Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. Wandering through it, with faces at eye level emerging from the stone, is genuinely surreal.
Ta Prohm
The temple left intentionally in the state archaeologists found it β trees growing through the walls, roots splitting stones. Atmospheric doesn't cover it.
Angkor Thom
The last capital of the Khmer Empire, a walled city over 9 square kilometers containing temples, terraces, and the Bayon at its center. The South Gate, with its causeway of gods and demons, is one of the most dramatic entrances in world architecture.
Phnom Penh
The capital holds the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) and Choeung Ek (the Killing Fields) β essential history for anyone traveling to Cambodia. Difficult but important.
Koh Rong Archipelago
Island beaches in the Gulf of Thailand, most still undeveloped. Bioluminescent plankton in the water after dark on Koh Rong Samloem. Come before the development catches up.
